Nathan Rosen is the creator and administrator of the Law Library Association of Greater New York's group in Linkedin, along with two other Linkedin groups. He is a knowledge specialist with 25 years of expertise in researching, organizing and distributing information and managing a library, training program, and an Intranet. Nathan has both a MLS from Columbia University and a JD from UMKC. He was the first librarian to be recognized as one of the top innovators by Inside Counsel magazine and was identified as a Top Researcher on Wall Street in a book on Super Searchers of Wall Street. Currently he is the Information Resources Manager at Morrison & Foerster, after serving 11 years as Vice President in the Legal & Compliance Department of Credit Suisse. Previously he was the Director of the Library & Technology Center at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and for 12 years the Associate Library Director at Proskauer Rose. Additionally he was worked in public libraries, university libraries, law firm libraries and business libraries. He is also a lawyer and author of more than 200 articles and books.

The "program" portion of the evening will begin promptly at 6:15 PM and run until about 7 PM. PROGRAM: New York Times prize-winning economics writer Louis Uchitelle will discuss the current "Great Recession" in New York and beyond. He will also share insights from his 2006 book "The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences." The book will be available for sale (ca. $15), and Mr. Uchitelle will be glad to sign copies. Please join us for this interesting and insightful presentation on the most important issue of today!

Louis Uchitelle has covered economics for The New York Times since 1987, focusing on business issues, monetary and fiscal policy and labor trends, particularly the unwinding of job security and the spread of layoffs. He originated and served as lead reporter for a series of seven stories published in March 1996 that explored the layoff phenomenon. The series, “The Downsizing of America,’’ won a Polk Award.

He also is the author of “The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences,’’ published by Knopf in 2006. He reported extensively on the Federal Reserve during Alan Greenspan’s early years as chairman and produced, for The Times Magazine, the first detailed magazine profile of Mr. Greenspan’s performance.

In the early 1990s, he spent weeks in Russia and Ukraine reporting on the former Soviet Union’s plunge into capitalism. He was the only journalist from a major American publication sent to concentrate on the economic transformation then taking place.

Mr. Uchitelle was a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York in 2002-03 and taught journalism for many years at Columbia University’s School of General Studies. Before joining The Times, he worked for The Associated Press as a reporter, an editor and a foreign correspondent in Latin America. He and his wife, Joan Uchitelle, live in Scarsdale, N.Y. They have two grown daughters.

This seminar presents advanced taxonomy topics and issues such as taxonomy maintenance, alternative uses and deployments. The Semantic Web and a host of related initiatives are headed your way. Will your taxonomy be ready? At the heart of the Semantic Web are words and phrases that represent concepts that can be used for describing Web resources. Basic organizing principles of concepts exist in the present thesaurus/taxonomy standards. Learn how to enrich your taxonomy for such knowledge organization systems (KOS) as the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS). Other topics that may be discussed, time permitting, are notation, facets, multilingual thesauri, and multiple taxonomies and thesauri. Feedback, suggestions, and questions from attendees will govern the discussion of these and other topics.

PROGRAM: The Honorable Laura Ward of the NYC Criminal Courts will tell us the intriguing story of how she and her colleagues in the the United States Attorney’s Office successfully prosecuted notorious mob boss John Gotti. The NY Times referred to this as stunning accomplishment as "a scintillating triumph for a team of Federal prosecutors who, with years of diligence and a few good breaks, breathed new life into a tired old script and shattered the maddening aura of invincibility of a notorious gangster who called himself a plumbing salesman." (April 3, 1992)

Judge Laura Ward was appointed to the Criminal Court in New York County in 1997, where she served for three years before becoming an Acting Supreme Court Justice in January of 2000. Judge Ward formerly worked for the United States Attorney’s Office, New York State Attorney General’s Office, the Organized Crime Strike Force and a private law firm. She is a current member of the Board of Directors of the Manhattan Plaza AIDS Foundation and the Associates Committee of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of New York. Judge Ward earned her JD from Fordham Law School.

This is an introductory-level course.

Dr. Brody's course was sold out at SLA's 2007 Conference in Denver and very well received at the 2008 annual conference in Seattle.

Back to Basics: Business Research

Business information seems to be everywhere but is it the information we really need and does it answer our client questions? It takes more than just finding information to perform business research! This course is designed to help you find, evaluate, and structure business information. Basic business sources and practical research tactics and strategies for finding business information will be offered; along with practical frameworks for decisions, processes, and methods of developing answers without being overwhelmed by the sources.

This basic strategies approach towards the collection and provision of quality business information research offers a variety of core concepts and techniques. Attendees will:

- Practice applying a research framework to solve business information research problems

- Be presented with eight research strategies and tactics which they can apply and interpret in performing business research

- Be instructed how to take a process approach to research questions.

The program includes business research basics-core research methods, strategies, and tactics; finding and using sources; and setting the work within larger professional and ethical contexts.

About Roberta Brody:

After building a successful research business, Roberta earned her Ph.D. in Information Policy from Rutgers University. Bobby Brody now educates the next generation of business researchers and corporate CI and information professionals at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College, City University of New York. She teaches business reference, competitive intelligence, and records management courses at the Graduate School.

A founding member of SCIP and one of its first presidents, Dr. Brody currently is a Fellow of the Society. For two years, she was Co-Editor of the Journal of Competitive Intelligence and Management.

Roberta has been an active member of SLA for over 25 years. She began as a student member when she was pursuing her MLS and has been active in both local and national activities.

SLA-NY will present this course on Thursday, April 2nd from 12:30-4:30 at METRO (57 East 11th Street, 4th Floor--between Broadway and University Place, near Union Square).

This four-hour course is being offered by the New York Chapter for $ 225 (SLA member) / $ 275 (non-member).
